How Maidstone is pioneering accepting tenants with pets!
If you want to know what can be achieved to accept pets in rented accommodation, then Maidstone is evidence of how change can be implemented.
Between Dee, Maidstone Borough Council and the following pet supporters, more pets are being accepted in rented accommodation.
- Helen Grant MP: Letter of support for The John Chadwick Pet Policy - The critical nature of 'pet companionship' for many homeless people
- Claudia Beamish MSP: Letter of support of pets in accommodation
- Society for Companion Animal Studies: Dr Elizabeth Ormerod's Statement is framed on the feature wall in Johns House
- UK Parliament: Early Day Motions
- Dr Debbie Rook: John Chadwick’s story as a case study for teaching on the Animal Law module on the undergraduate law degree at Northumbria Law School
- Maidstone Borough Council 'The John Chadwick Pet Policy' – Dee Bonett and John Littlemore (Head of housing at Maidstone Borough Council) - view the presentation below:
Kenward Trust Street Reach
In June 2022, Kenward Trust implemented a Street Outreach Service in Memory of John Chadwick.
We assist soup kitchens and the community, by providing a floating support service. We are experienced in addiction, housing, benefits and referral pathways.
We are looking for extra funding to expand the service further, to enable us to support more people. If you can, please gift to: The Kenward Trust Street Reach
The John Chadwick House
We have created actual rental accommodation called 'Johns House' for homeless people and their pets.
We have a home that is leased to Kenward which officially opened in July 2024 for three of 'our' gents. There are no time constraints to move on to the housing register, as with our other Move On Projects.
The John Chadwick House is their 'home' for however long. This gives us as the Street Reach Team, an opportunity to provide clothes, food and a pop in, without being intrusive. So I now have that 'little something for me' too.

Help me to get more pet friendly rented properties across England!
